Marshmallow root has been used for thousands of years in traditional herbal medicine, traditionally used to soothe irritated mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Marshmallow root tea is a herbal infusion of the dried root, typically prepared by steeping in a cold infusion overnight or in a hot infusion with boiling water. When steeped, the mucilage dissolves to form a protective, slippery coating that can coat and soothe irritation.
